The first thing that surprises people when they meet me is that I’m an Associate Director, probably because I’m only 24 and I don’t look it. The second thing is that my Company is a family business. Our business is an example of a still rare but growing phenomenon – a Company run by a father and daughter.
The next question is always, “what’s it like working with your dad?” I get that a lot, that is when he’s not being confused as my husband! (I take after my Indian mother in looks, whereas my dad would struggle to tan in the desert). And the answer is, it’s easy! Dad and I are like two peas in a pod. We have a brilliant relationship and lots of things in common, which makes it easy to work together. Dad has the knowledge and the experience, and I bring enthusiasm, energy and new ideas to help continue to push the business forward and expand.
It was never my intention to take over the family business or go into valuation. Dad set up Proudley Associates in 2009, after twenty five years in the industry working for the likes of Edward Symmonds and Hilco Appraisal. Our Company values and sells assets for businesses and insolvency practitioners nationwide. In 2009, I was still at school, with the intention of studying BioChemistry at University and becoming a Bio Chemist. I didn’t really even know what my dad did as a job – let alone want to follow in his footsteps!
I started working for him in 2010, just on a part-time basis to earn a bit of money, just typing up asset schedules and accompanying him on the odd job when I wasn’t at college. Somewhere along the line, I started to enjoy the work more than the science. I got offers from various universities for BioChemistry, but when it came down to decision time, I realised I had much more prospects in my current job than continuing down the science route.
So, five years later, I am a fully qualified member of NAVA – the National Association of Valuers and Auctioneers, and I have risen from Junior Valuer to Associate Director. I am currently in my second year of studying BSc Real Estate Management at the University College of Estate Management, with the intention of becoming a Chartered Surveyor. It’s a distance course that takes 5 years and is tough whilst I am working essentially full-time, but luckily the boss gives me one day off a week to study and work on my assignments.
The business has gone from strength to strength since it began. Following a successful 7 years as chattel valuers and auctioneers, we are now branching out into the world of valuation, disposal and management of commercial and residential property. We’re even keeping it in the family, with my cousin Lewis coming on board this summer to train as a valuer.
